How to Prevent Dust from Entering Your Boston, MA Home & Get Rid of Dust Floating in the Air!

Dust. This dirty four letter word not only makes homes all over the world look unclean, but there are several people that are highly allergic to it. Of course you can’t completely eliminate this problem. Dust is just a part of life; however, it can be reduced. Nadia’s House Cleaning would like to share some tips to help you keep the dust down in your home.

Use the Right Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning is a big part of keeping dust out of your home. If you use the wrong supplies, you may not be eliminating the problem at all, just moving it around. When you are wiping down surfaces in your home, ditch the old feather duster. You will have much more success when you use a microfiber cloth and some warm water to get the job done. Microfiber clothes trap dirt and dust in their fibers and water assists them in removing excess dust from all surfaces in your home. Water is the safest thing you can use when giving your home a wipe-down.

Groom Pets to Minimize Pet Hair & Dander

If you have pets, you may have noticed the hair they shed, but you may not have noticed the dander they leave behind. It is microscopic and a large source of dust. Getting your pet groomed often will help keep the hair and pet dander down. If you have a cat, consider keeping their litter box covered to keep dust down.

Change Bedding Frequently to Remove Dust Mites

Your bed is a dust catching machine. If you don’t change your bedding regularly, you should consider starting to do so. This will help eliminate a big source of dust. Your bedding should be changed once a week and the items that you don’t wash regularly, can be shaken outside to remove dust. If you don’t want to run your pillows through the wash, consider having them dry cleaned to get rid of the dust mites they collect.

Don’t Open the Windows

The fresh air only an open window can provide; is also bringing in dust with it. If you want to reduce the amount of dust in your home, leave those windows closed. Open windows allow pollen, mold spores and other airborne pollutants into your home. This is especially true on a day that is breezy or windy. If you suffer from allergies, keeping your windows closed will help improve your symptoms as well.

Cushion & Rug Beater

Carpeting and rugs are dust catchers. This is also true for the cushions on your furniture. Take them outside and beat them with a broom or tennis racket to get rid of dust mites and dirt. This is a simple way to cut down dust.

Use a HEPA Filter Vacuum

Like mentioned above, carpeting collects dust like crazy. Using the right vacuum is necessary in cutting down the dust in your home. Not only does your vacuum need good suction but the agitator needs to be powerful to remove dust from the fibers of your carpeting. You should also use a vacuum with a HEPA filter built in. A HEPA filter traps smaller particles and works more efficiently at removing dust.
