Indoor Allergies; What Could I Be Allergic to in My Boston, MA House & How Does Cleaning Help?

Those households with children, the elderly or others with respiratory problems such as asthma, often suffer from indoor allergens that can trigger illness and other respiratory ailments. For those who try to ease the suffering of these indoor allergens by keeping a clean and tidy home often overlook some areas in their cleaning routine. Nadias House Cleaning would like to share some of the greatest problem areas of indoor allergens inside homes and how you can properly clean them.

Indoor Allergies at Home

Carpets and Rugs – Carpets and rugs often hold in dirt, dust mites and other contaminants. However, many will vacuum their carpet to help keep these allergens at bay. Did you know there are proper vacuuming techniques? For those with a little OCD when you’re vacuuming your floor, you may like to create straight lines that make the carpet look professionally cleaned. As it looks amazing it is not a proper vacuuming technique and doesn’t clean carpet very thoroughly. When vacuuming your carpet, make sure to vacuum in multiple directions to help loosen all the dirt and pollutants that is held deep within the carpet pile. However for those with a little OCD after vacuuming in multiple directions you can then create your straight rows. Additionally, carpets and rugs should be deep cleaned every 3 or 6 months to maintain allergy free carpets.
Light Fixtures – Ceiling fans and other light fixtures accumulate a lot of dust and other pollutants. Some of these cause air born allergens, especially ceiling fans. When cleaning light fixtures it is recommended to use a vacuum cleaner to remove the majority of the dust, and then use a damp cleaning cloth to wipe away the rest of the dust. Afterward, use your preferred cleaning solution to do the finishing touches. This method of cleaning light fixture helps prevent unnecessary airborne pollutants from going into your home.
Bedding and Mattresses – Both your bedding and mattresses are filled with dust, dead skin, hair, and other bodily fluids. These don’t just cause allergens but also other skin irritations and illnesses. Most of us will wash bedding to maintain clean sheets and blankets. However, the mattress is still filled with pollutants. Mattresses should be vacuumed and cleaned every 3 months to help keep the mattress clean.
Mold and Mildew Growth – Mold and mildew growth can cause breathing problem as well as serious illness. Mold growth can develop in many places within the home, especially areas exposed to moisture. Where there is a leaky pipe underneath cabinets, bathrooms, laundry room, and kitchen, they are prone to mold growth. These areas should be cleaned with approved mold killers or preventative solution. Bleach can be hard on those with asthma so you may need to find a cleaner that is easier on those with respiratory problems. Areas that are exposed to moisture often should be treated with mold cleaners to help prevent mold development. Make sure to be thorough and even clean inside the cabinets or tight areas where mold or mildew can develop.
Pet Dander – Even if you keep your home clean, you might find you are constantly cleaning up after your pets. To help combat pet dander, brush your pets daily. You will find this will help reduce pet hair and dander in your home, and even the allergens.
