Cleaning Facts & Myths in Wilmington, MA; You Shouldn’t Use Bleach to Clean Every Surface & More

Though some may not be as diligent as others, cleaning is frequently done on a daily basis. Some folks detest it or simply have busy lifestyles and others find cleaning therapeutic and enjoyable. Unfortunately, there are those that take many cleaning myths to heart when it comes to the various tasks and cleaning schedules. A handful of these myths is what we at Nadia’s House Cleaning would like to share and set the record straight today.

Did You Know Facts & Myths About Cleaning

Myth: To deodorize the garbage disposal, coffee grounds are best.
Fact: Though they may be an optimal abrasive to dislodge dislodging gunk from the blades, coffee grounds do not do much to neutralize the odors. To do both, use baking soda instead. By design, it neutralizes the offensive smells, and it is abrasive enough to remove the gunk.
Myth: Washing dishes by hand is more effective than using the dishwasher.
Fact: Though this may be true with dishwashers that are older than a decade or perhaps malfunctioning, modern dishwashers are far more effective than hand washing. Ensuring the dishes are not only cleaned, but sanitized as well, modern dishwashers have advanced, making them more energy and water efficient while rising the water temperature up over 140 degrees.
Myth: Using wet newspapers to clean windows.
Fact: Ultimately leaving a bigger mess behind, they easily tear and leave behind residual particles and potentially transfer ink print onto the trim, making the wet newspapers not the best option to use. Invest in a good quality squeegee and microfiber cloths instead to ensure you get clean windows.
Myth: Clean toilets with Coca-Cola.
Fact: The high sugar content that promotes bacteria and the bowl can be stained from the dark caramel dyes, though Coca-Cola is an effective hard water stain remover due to the acidic nature. A better alternative is either white vinegar or preferred toilet bowl cleaner.
Myth: Use hairspray to efficiently remove ink messes from ball point pens.
Truth: Hairspray containing excessive amounts of alcohol is excellent backup to remove the ink since most contain rubbing alcohol, but rubbing alcohol alone does the trick. Keep in mind that many hairsprays today are being formulated to keep the alcohol ingredient out of them, which does not help in the slightest removing the ink. To remove any ink before you try any other method, use a cotton swab treated with rubbing alcohol.
Myth: Anything in the house can be cleaned with bleach and vinegar.
Fact: Bleach cannot cut through soil though it will efficiently sanitize various surfaces and bleach lighten stains and kill bacteria. It needs to be diluted according to the surface. Also, vinegar is acidic in nature and can be used for cleaning purposes, but also needs to be diluted. Keep in mind however, vinegar stone surfaces and other related materials can actually cause damage.
