Preparing for Day & Overnight Guests in Boston, MA; Holiday House Cleaning Tips

With the holidays here you may be expecting guests dropping by or even staying with you for the season. Many panic and wonder where to begin cleaning. No one wants a dirty or smelly home when guest are expected. Nadias House Cleaning knows this, which is why we will help guide you in sharing some of the essential areas to clean and how your home can be ready to receive visitors this holiday season.

Cleaning House for Guests Checklist

Entryway – Let’s start with where you will greet or invite guests into your home. Begin cleaning the area by wiping down the front door on both sides. For those with door mats, shake them out and sweep underneath them so that the area is cleaned. Clean off all ledges and surface areas in the entryway.
Kitchen – When you have guests over or, even staying with you, often the kitchen becomes a major gathering zone. You will want to make sure the kitchen is clean and void of bad odors. The kitchen can take a quite a bit of time. You will want to clean light fixtures, dust off cabinets and other surfaces. You may want to clean out drains with boiling water mixed with vinegar to remove bad odors. Of course clean appliances inside and out, as well as the counter tops and floors.
Bathrooms – Another area you don’t want to neglect is the bathrooms. Again, use boiling water mixed with vinegar to flush drains in both sink and tub. Clean cabinets and other surface areas such as floors, toilets, and shower or bathtubs. For soap scum build up, try making a paste using baking soda and vinegar let the paste sit for a short time then scrub the soap scum off the tub or shower.
Living Room – It goes without saying that the living room will require some cleaning. Most will clean the typical surface areas. However during the holiday season you may want to clean with more detail. Clean light fixtures first. Wash curtains and furniture covers. Vacuum furniture and dust off shelving and all other surfaces.
Windows – Now is a good time to clean windows. A quick and easy way to clean windows without leaving streaks behind is to use distilled water mixed with vinegar in a spray bottle. Using a micro-fiber cloth spray the vinegar on your windows for a crystal clear finish. For outside of the window use a garden hose and spray away the dirt. With a sponge and soapy water, clean the windows. Again, use the vinegar water mixture to give the windows the final touches.
Guest Room(s) – If you’re having guests stay for the holidays, make sure to clean the guest room. Wash bedding and have fresh towels ready. Clean all surfaces and vacuum floors thoroughly. If guest rooms have been vacant for some time, the air may be stagnant. Open windows for a day to help circulate fresh air into the room to help freshen up the atmosphere.
